Old House on the Hill
Even though I love the bright and cheery feel of my work ideally there is some sort of darkness that lingers somewhere below the surface. Without this dichotomy I think the work would be boring. It is like the big old house on a hill idea--it is old and dilapidated but there are these details and a history inside and out that make it really powerful and beautiful. The dark victorian wallpaper and the undulating folds together with the bright and soft circular forms in the Old House on the Hill paintings create that feel and that bit of complexity that I am always striving for. Maybe it was the long drawn out winter or the slow-to-get-going spring, I don’t know, but I am ready to be inspired by warmth and sunshine now.
In other news, I found some paintings online that I absolutely love and and a new website that I look at all the time: designspongeonline.com. The paintings are by an artist named Rosetta Santucci. They are really big and beautiful and earthy (not in color) and they make you want them or at least in my case they make me want to make paintings that stunning. There are lots of super inspiring interior design ideas on the blog too if you are into that or even if you not.
I am very excited to have been one of the artists interviewed by Peter Bryan Jenkins for his “Lifestyle and Design” magazine peterbryanjenkins.com. The article is up through April. My work along with Kevin’s new photographs are also up at Suzette, a gorgeous little space on Alberta. We will be there along with the work for Last Thursday, April 29--the show will run through May 23-- as well as the Alberta Art Hop on Saturday, May 15th.
